The football program has become one of the successfull high school football programs in Orange County often producing college and pro athletes. The tournament was put together well. Offering lunch, dinner, excellent goodie bags and competitions throughout the course, such as the longest drive with shoulder pads as demonstrated in the picture. "I have knee pain on my knee cap, how do I handle this?". The reason I love this question is that it's typically an easy fix and makes me appear to be on top of my training game since many OC Fitness Solution's clients come to us to stay functional and get rid of pesky, limiting joint pain. For immediate relief, get a foam roll and roll out the front of the thigh musculature (Quads) (See picture). Then to help prevent the pain from recurring make sure to keep your heels planted firmly on the ground when doing most lower body exercises, such as squats, lunges, leg presses, deadlifts, and step-ups. When in doubt, heels are your knees best friend! Now for many of us on the west coast, winter is more like spring compared to most other parts of the Unites States. But don't let the cold and snow keep you indoors. THIS IS NOT A TIME TO HIBERNATE! Put your fitness to the test and get outdoors and challenge yourself with a winter activity or just a plain high in less then mild conditions. I recently went to Wisconsin for the holidays and took hikes through the woods in 8-12 inches of snow. What I thought was going to be a dreadful task actually inspired me. The cold, clean and crisp air felt amazing. And the challenge of hiking through the snow with winter gear was quite a new experience for me. The test of my ankle stablility, remembering to lift my legs high to prevent dragging my feet in the snow and the overall environment, made what would be a simple 2 mile walk into a seriuos 2 mile hike. I did this for several days in a row and was impressed with my body's ability to adapt to new environments and conditions. So if you want a new challenge or to have a reality check, check your general fitness routine at the door and get outside and perform your normal outdoor routines in a new winter environment. You may be surprised!

Balance Can Be Trained.

Over my 14 years of being a certified personal trainer in the world of fitness, the statements I receive from people about their bodies AMAZES me! I suppose I take the many amazing features the human body comes with for granted. None the less, one incredible statement I hear regularly is "I've never had good balance..." or "That athlete has the gift of balance...", as if balance is a phenomenon and only few humans have it. The reality is we all have "balance" to some degree. There are those people who seem to have better balance than others, but that is not to say an individual's balance cannot be improved through training. In fact, that is the truth. You can improve your balance with the correct training and consistency. Balance is so important and trainable that many health and fitness professionals consider it the sixth component of physical fitness. One way to get started on improving your balance is to practice standing on one leg, without "locking" your leg straight. If you're in the gym, find a balance board and give it 3, 1-minute sets. You'll be amazed at your own body's physical aptitude and at how quickly your balance begins to make gains. For more advanced balance and stability training techniques and exercises, contact us today for a balance make-over.
